FE Exam Overview
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first of two exams that engineers must pass to become licensed professional engineers. The FE exam is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited program.
FE Exam Format
- Computer-based test (CBT)
- 110 questions
- 5 hours and 20 minutes total exam time
- Exam appointments available year-round
FE Exam Disciplines
The FE exam is offered in seven disciplines:
- Chemical
- Civil
- Electrical and Computer
- Environmental
- Industrial and Systems
- Mechanical
- Other Disciplines
FE Exam Topics
Each FE exam discipline covers a range of topics specific to that discipline. However, all exams include the following topics:

- Ethics and Professional Practice

Registration and Scheduling
To register for the FE exam, create an account with NCEES and follow the registration process. Once registered, you can schedule your exam appointment through your NCEES account.
Exam Results and Scoring
FE exam results are typically available 7-10 days after the exam date. The exam is scored as pass/fail based on the ability of the examinee to demonstrate minimum competency in the subject matter.
