ASWB Exam Overview
The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) offers five categories of social work licensing exams:
- Associate
- Bachelors
- Masters
- Advanced Generalist
- Clinical
Exam Purpose
ASWB exams are used to measure a social worker’s competence to practice ethically and safely. Passing the appropriate ASWB exam is required for licensure in most states and jurisdictions.

Registering for an Exam
To register for an ASWB exam, candidates must:
- Meet eligibility requirements set by their jurisdiction’s licensing board
- Create an account on the ASWB website
- Pay the required exam fee
- Schedule an exam appointment at a Pearson VUE testing center
Exam Scoring and Results
- Exams are scored on a pass/fail basis
- Candidates receive an unofficial pass/fail result at the testing center upon completion of the exam
- Official results are provided to the candidate’s licensing board within 2 weeks of the exam date
