Definition
A preposition is a word placed before a Noun and Pronoun to show its relation to some other words in the sentence.
There are five different types of preposition
- Simple
- Double
- Compound
- participle
- Phrase Preposition
1. Simple Preposition
The following simple preposition are as :-
In , it, with, by, of, from, up, to, after, over, under, within.
2. Double Preposition
Double preposition are used when simple prepositions do not serve the purpose. Double prepositions are :-
into, onto, within, outside, etc.
3. Compound Preposition
The following compound prepositions are as :-
within, inside, outside, beneath.
4. Participle Preposition
Present or Past participle are used as prepositions such as:-
pending, during, except, concerning, regarding, etc.
5. Phrase Preposition
Some times two or more words, followed by a preposition, make a phrase. The preposition thus used is called phrase preposition. Examples:-
inspite of, by means of, in front of, in opposition to, with reference to.
